The  system of  72 Meḷakartā rāgas also known as the Sampūrṇa Meḷakartā system, was developed by the 17th-century musicologist Śrī Govindācārya and listed in his book Saṅgrahacūḍāmaṇi. Another system, known as the Rāgāṅga or Asampūrṇa Meḷa system, was previously in vogue. It was propounded by Śrī Veṅkaṭamakhin in his Caturdanḍīprakāśikā.

While Śrī Muddusvāmi Dīkṣitā has adhered to the Asampūrṇa scheme in his works, Śrī Tyāgarāja Svāmī is known to have followed the Sampūrṇa meḷa.
