Practice Music! How? Why?
By : Aarabhi Rajeshkumar
I started my music journey with Guru Smt. Sandhya Aunty three years ago. I had my struggles in the early stages with Sruthi, Talam, Pitch etc. I’m sure many of you have gone through some or all of the early struggles as I did and I’m sure each of you would have tackled with your own methods. However, there is one common method, as Sandhya Aunty emphasizes always is ‘Practice’.
“Practice make you Perfect” - as the saying goes Practice is the cornerstone for mastering any art form and Carnatic Music is no exception.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced learner consistent practice is essential to refine your skills and deepen your understanding in music.
Each of you practice using your own methods, of course one size does not fit all. For example, Sruthi may be perfect for one, but Talam may not be or Talam may be perfect but can’t remember the Swaras or lyrics. I wanted to share the practice techniques I follow with the hope it will benefit all the students and bring the best out of each of us.
My daily practice involves 3 stages Warmup, Learning and Practice. I follow the techniques below under each of the stages during my practice.

Following the daily practice routines enabled me to improve on my music.al journey:
-
Internalize the intricate patterns of ragas and talas.
-
Creativity

-
Vocal strength, breath control and stamina.

-
Techniques by achieving precision in pitch, rhythm and sustain in a single note.

-
Building Muscle Memory, boosting confidence, and focus.
